W-10 -- 3 for of 1: Embedding Grammar & Vocabulary in Communicative Activities

GRETA LUNDGAARD

FEATURED SPEAKER

It’s a core practice: Teach grammar as a concept and use it in context. Even if we figure out what that means, we suspect there is more to it than one catchphrase. Key structures, language chunks, and target vocabulary are lifeless without meaning, purpose, and intentionality. What language our learners use to communicate is a cornerstone to proficiency growth. How do our learners acquire language they need while they participate and communicate? This workshop explores how to design activities that embed key structures and target vocabulary into communicative activities and tasks.

Domestic violence, exploitation, and sexual stereotypes will be explored within the context of the "Balance ton porc" movement in France. Participants will receive a PowerPoint presentation along with a sample pedagogical unit.

W-12 -- Improving Student Interaction By Improving Digital Literacy Skills

Brian Hunter--University of Cincinnati

Sheri Barksdale--University of Cincinnati

When students contend with technical problems on the distance-learning (DL) platform, help is hard to find. Implementing Readiness Assessment Activities (RAA) the first week of the course will improve student digital literacy with the technologies found in the DL platform, allowing for improved student interaction in the course. The workshop will start with a discussion about the problems students have on DL platform and the importance of digital literacy. Participants will then learn about implementing RAA and have time to identify an issue they would like to address and create their own RAA.

Participants should bring a laptop or an iPad to the workshop. Spanish/English & French/English children's books will be provided.
